How Online Stores Actually Work
E-commerce is simply buying and selling products or services online. But behind the "Add to Cart" button is a complex system of interconnected parts — product databases, payment processors, shipping calculators, inventory trackers, and marketing tools all working together in real time.
When a customer visits your online store, they're interacting with a product catalog pulled from a database. When they add items to their cart, the system tracks quantities and calculates totals. At checkout, their payment information is securely transmitted to a payment processor (like Stripe or PayPal), which communicates with banks to authorize the transaction. Once approved, the order flows into your fulfillment system, shipping labels are generated, and the customer gets tracking information — all automatically.
The difference between a store that converts at 1% and one that converts at 4% often comes down to design, speed, and the checkout experience. A 3% difference might not sound like much, but on 10,000 monthly visitors, that's the difference between 100 and 400 sales. Every detail matters.
Payment Processing Explained
Payment processing is how money gets from your customer's bank account or credit card into your business account. It seems simple from the outside, but there's a chain of players involved: the payment gateway (captures card info), the payment processor (routes the transaction), the card network (Visa, Mastercard), and the issuing bank (approves or declines).
Stripe is the most popular choice for custom e-commerce builds. It handles credit cards, debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and even buy-now-pay-later services. Transaction fees are typically 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. PayPal is familiar to consumers and adds trust, especially for first-time buyers. Square is excellent if you also have a physical retail location and want unified online + in-store sales tracking.
We integrate whichever payment providers make sense for your business, and we always implement them with PCI compliance in mind — meaning your customers' payment data is handled securely according to industry standards. Your store never directly touches raw credit card numbers; that's handled by the payment processor's secure infrastructure.
Shopify vs. Custom-Built Stores
🟢 Shopify / Hosted Platforms
Shopify is a hosted e-commerce platform — you pay a monthly fee and get a complete store out of the box. It's the fastest way to start selling online and handles hosting, security updates, and payment processing for you.
Best for: Businesses that want to launch fast, don't need heavily custom features, and prefer predictable monthly costs. If you're selling physical products and need something live in 2-4 weeks, Shopify is often the right call.
Limitations: Monthly fees add up ($39-$399/month plus transaction fees), customization is limited to what apps and themes allow, and you're locked into Shopify's ecosystem.
🔵 Custom-Built Stores
A custom e-commerce store is built from the ground up (or using headless commerce tools like Medusa, Saleor, or WooCommerce). You own every line of code and can build exactly the experience you want.
Best for: Businesses with unique requirements — complex product configurations, subscription models, custom pricing logic, multi-vendor marketplaces, or stores that need to integrate deeply with existing systems.
Tradeoff: Higher upfront cost and longer build time, but lower ongoing fees and unlimited flexibility. You own the code and aren't dependent on a platform's pricing decisions.
We build on both. We'll recommend whichever approach makes more sense for your specific situation — no platform bias.

SEO for E-Commerce: Getting Found on Google
E-commerce SEO is different from regular website SEO. You're not just optimizing a handful of pages — you're optimizing hundreds or thousands of product pages, category pages, and collection pages, all competing for search visibility.
We structure your store for search engines from the start: clean URL hierarchies (/category/subcategory/product), unique product descriptions (not manufacturer copy-paste), proper schema markup (so Google shows prices, reviews, and availability in search results), optimized images with descriptive alt text, and fast page load speeds. We also set up Google Shopping feeds so your products can appear in Google's shopping carousel — the image-based results at the top of product searches.
Good e-commerce SEO compounds over time. Each product page is a potential landing page from Google. A store with 200 well-optimized products has 200 chances to capture organic search traffic — free traffic that doesn't require ongoing ad spend.
Security & PCI Compliance
When you accept credit card payments online, you're subject to PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) requirements. These are the rules that protect your customers' financial data. Non-compliance can result in fines, increased transaction fees, or loss of the ability to process cards.
The good news: by using established payment processors like Stripe and PayPal, most of the heavy PCI compliance burden is handled for you. Your store never directly stores or processes raw credit card numbers — the payment processor does that in their certified infrastructure. We ensure your store is configured to maintain this separation and meets SAQ A or SAQ A-EP requirements (the simplest compliance levels for e-commerce).
Beyond PCI, we implement SSL encryption site-wide, secure admin access with two-factor authentication, regular security updates, bot protection on checkout, and fraud detection tools. Your customers' data — and your business reputation — are protected.
